New Art ~ Pterois volitans

I'm not quite finished yet, but here it is, after weeks working on the sketch, and on the second day of painting, I'm almost done!

Pterois volitans - more commonly known as the common lionfish. This mermaid is almost finished. I have a few things to fix up generally, and the shell isn't finished yet. But I thought I'd show it to you now, because if I run out of time (it's a birthday present) it will stay how it is. Tell me what you think. I apologise for the bad photo!

Watercolours on A3 Arches Medium Press. I don't know how I'm going to scan it, my scanner will bend it (it's only A4 and has raised sides.) Sorry for the bad photo. My light is crappy so I had to use flash, cause it's dark!

I'm thinking it needs something else in the background, but I'm not sure what. The mermaid was influenced by an artist whose work we both admire, so hopefully she'll like it! Of course it helps that she loves lionfish ...

Happy February

  • Feb. 2nd, 2009 at 5:27 PM
Shadows

Welcome to February all!

I finally finished the sketch for my best friend's birthday. I'm not happy with parts of it, but if I don't tell you, maybe you won't notice. That's my theory anyway :P. I've finished the background, and now I'm waiting for it to dry so that I can remove the masking fluid and begin the figure.

Sorry for the bad photo.

I finished the first two books of the Night Angel trilogy within 24 hours of starting. Unfortunately my brother has yet to read the third, and won't let me read it until he has finished. He reads a lot slower than I do :(.

I enrolled in my uni course last Thursday. I'm doing a double degree of a Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts at the University of Sydney. I have to do 12cp of Maths, which is annoying, but necessary I suppose. Along with the Maths I'm doing a unit of Biology, Chemistry and Ancient History for both semesters 1 and 2. I'll also be doing junior English units next year, to set me up for the arts. If I can fit it in I'll also do some junior Psycology, but I'm not sure. I haven't looked at 2nd year subjects yet.

Uni doesn't start until 2nd March, and my parents are bugging me to get some sort of job until then, and something part time to continue through the year. Personally I'm enjoying my non workingness. I don't really want to end up doing a boring job in Coles or something. (I have a friend who works in Coles. She hates it.) Aaaaaaaaanyway.

I'm going to stop making excuses for the big Tasmania post. It will happen. Sometime.

I did the beep test with Dad last night. I got up to stage 6, which is kind of pitiful for me, but I haven't done any decent exercise in about 9 months. Or more. Probably more. But it's a start. It felt good to actually do something. I'm pretty sure I'll keep it up :P. You guys can keep me honest. One random thing I noticed though, is that I can't run in a straight line. Kinda sad really.

'The Way of Shadows' - Brent Weeks

Dr Who - Donna
I picked up the first of a trilogy today from my brother's bookshelf. The book, The Way Of Shadows isn't necessarily a book I was planning on reading. I read an excerpt online when Lachlan was showing the trilogy to me, but I didn't really like it. The book has really surprised me though. It has an interesting plot line, with lots of little twists and turns. For all that the main character, Kylar, is an assassin, he's human too. The characters have depth as well, and they're interesting!

I love a good tortured soul. I don't know what that says about me :P. Trying to do good, but always being seen as bad. Not that being an assassin is necessarily good, but he had the right reasons at the beginning. Dirk* is the best character I've ever read. I love Dirk. He's trying so hard to right the wrongs that he sacrifices everything. Kylar is made of the same stuff as Dirk. Or so I think. I love him almost as much. He has feelings, qualms about what he's doing, regrets and dreams, just like everybody else. Which makes you forget that he kills people for a living.

And now that's my little interlude over. I'm only up to page 381 in the first book! I must finish them!!!

On Having Short Hair

  • Jan. 28th, 2009 at 4:52 PM
Dr Who - Dr

I'll admit, it's not actually that short. Just above bsl. But it's short for me. I haven't had my hair this short in years. It's about 6 inches shorter than it used to be. The cut was necessary - it was all dead stuff. Now my hair is super nice and smooth with no yucky bits :). Since having my hair cut, I've spent most of my time camping. Short(er. Let's call it medium length) hair is unbelievably easy to manage.

For one, it takes a lot less time to wash, and because all the yucky bits are all gone, I don't spend as long trying to make sure the ends are swimming in conditioner in an effort to try and make them feel nice. Off course, directly related to washing time is drying time. My hair has been drying a whole lot quicker. Which is good when I'm showering just before I go to bed. A soaking pillow is not the most comfortable sleeping companion, especially when combined with the condensation that accumulates on the side of the tents occasionally.

As my hair has grown over the years, it's gained a whole lot of weight as it gets longer, so my curls have become more relaxed, and been pulled down, so they start further down my head, if you catch my meaning. It's amazing the difference six inches can make. My hair is a whole lot springier, it tangles a lot less, and the curls are longer. Which is kind of funny. I think that's what I like the most. That my curls feel a whole lot more ... curly. It's cool :) I do miss the length though. I'm aiming for waist length, although I will have to figure something out to counter all that weight! At that length, my curls may disappear a bit!

I've been a bit lazy on getting together the Tasmania stuff for a post. I keep meaning to do it, but I get sidetracked. I will have something up soon though, even if it only has a couple of pictures, I promise!

Interview Meme

  • Jan. 25th, 2009 at 3:32 PM
Fizgig

It took me a while to think of the answers to these, it was harder than I thought. They were good questions though! Thanks Kirstin!

1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me!"
2. I will respond by asking you five questions. I get to pick the questions.
3. You will post the answers to the questions (and the questions themselves) on your blog or journal.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions. And thus the endless cycle of the meme goes on and on and on and on...

These questions from [info]kirstinmills

 1) What, above all else, is your biggest ambition in life?
I can’t think of one single thing that is the biggest ambition I have for my life at the moment. I’m sure that by the end of next week I will have thought about this long and hard enough to come up with a more narrowed answer. I know that I want to spend my life doing things I love. I want to experience as much of the natural beauty of our world as possible, and understand the complexities of our many cultures. I want to write, and I want to paint. I want to study animals in their natural habitats and make contributions to their conservation, and protection, as well as understanding them. I want to contribute to the world, such as working to save species, promote conservation, or simply to share the objects of my creativity. I want to love and be loved. To be secure in knowing who I am, and liking myself for who I am. To know that no matter what I do, my friends and family will support me.

2) Where is your favourite place in the world to be?

Surrounded by people who are important to me. My friends, my family, my Tobias. The location isn’t so important, but being surrounded by people I love is very important to me. I do need time to be by myself though. I often lie in bed in the mornings, simply to think, whilst Tobi walks all over me, nibbles at my ear, and preens my hair. I love that time, it’s definitely a favourite time or ‘place’.

I guess that I would say that my favourite tangible place to be would be my bedroom, where I am surrounded by beautiful, inspiring artwork, my bookcase with all of my scruffy, much read favourites. I do all of my writing and drawing in my bedroom too, so I guess the inspiration stuff is working! I have all of my ornaments in there too, and they’re all gorgeous and meaningful to me. Of course Tobi lives in my room as well.

Other than my room – the great outdoors. I love nature. And simply sitting and observing is a wonderful place to be, definitely one of my favourites!

3) If there is one thing you would wish to think about before you went to sleep every night, what would it be?
I always spend the time before I go to sleep writing stories in my head. I always fall asleep during the middle of course. And then I forget most of it the next morning. I definitely want to keep composing these stories or scenes before I go to sleep – they’re interesting. I wouldn’t mind thinking about things I’m supposed to remember for uni – it would mean I remembered it! (Hopefully!) I’m quite happy with my stories though.

4) Are you a late nights or early mornings kind of person?

I’m a weird person. I vary. A lot of the time I get my best inspiration at night, and I can write for hours and not get tired, yet I love working early in the morning as well, before anyone else is up. It can also depend on what I’m doing. If I’m absorbed with what I’m doing, or in great company etc, I can stay up really late. I do love lying in bed in the mornings thinking though, that’s a great time to think J. I guess I’d say I’m a night person.

5) What are your nicknames and how did you get them?

 - Fizz is the nickname my father has always called me by. I don’t actually know where it comes from. I should ask. My hair is curly, so maybe from ‘frizz’? Maybe it’s related to energy. Or maybe it’s something completely different. I should ask :P

 - Professor is one of the many nicknames given to me by my best friend. I know lots of random snippets of information on lots of random things. Mostly recalled from books read, or shows watched, or just things people have said. So Tina calls me Professor. We also call each other twit, twat, dingbat and many other things. Hood is another nickname from Tina, mainly just a play on my last name, also Hod.

 - Shorty, Shrimp and other nicknames associated with shortness that I get from my three younger brothers and my father, all of whom are taller than me!

 - Other nicknames I’ve gotten in the past include ‘Airy Fairy’, as I often drift off into my own world, various names to do with questioning my sanity, also hippy and any other words that can be associated with my tendency to go barefoot, climb trees and make flower chains!

If you read this far, I applaud you! Re-reading what I wrote, I think it’s a little obvious that I worked out the answers to these questions as I typed. I hope I actually reached a point, instead of simply musing! It’s an insight into how my mind works anyway, as well as how I talk!

Tina don't go

  • Jan. 24th, 2009 at 9:54 PM
Dr Who - Blue Box
My best friend is moving ot Wagga Wagga. For 6 years. On the 15th of February. I know I'll be able to see her a lot still, but I feel like crying. She's going to the uni there for Vet Science, and apparently their semesters and things are longer than ours. I only found out she was definitely going this afternoon. I always knew it was a possibility, but I never expected it to happen so soon. And possibilities and reality are very different things.

I keep having second thoughts about my own uni degree. I'm pretty sure I want to do the double degree at Sydney, but I keep thinking that maybe I'm not giving Macquarie much of a chance. But then a lot of my closest friends are going there, so maybe it's simply a reflex reaction. My friends are a big part of my life. I know I'll still be able to see them lots, but it's not the same. I did check out the units available for both unis, and Macquarie did offer a couple that I really wish Sydney had, but Sydney had more that I wish Macquarie had than the other way around. I don't know.

I haven't finished sorting through Tasmania stuff yet, though I'll be sure to post when I am! I picked Tobi up yesterday evening and I am so happy to have my birdie back! I missed him soo much, and I could tell he missed me. He fed right off my hands yesterday. He's back to his usual squeal-at-hands self tonight, but at least he's had a recent good experience. It gives a much better base to work on.

Goodbye 08, Hel-lo 2009

  • Dec. 31st, 2008 at 3:00 PM
Cartoon Hero
Like many other people around the world, I am greatly looking forward to the new year. Whilst 2008 wasn't that bad a year for me - I completed my HSC year of school, and made a lot of decisions on how I want to spend my life, and how I'm going to get there, it was still a year of great trials. I seriously crashed in the middle of the year, and that feeling lasted almost to the end, it's not really something I want to go into, but it did cause many problems, and whilst I managed to pick up enough at the end of the year get reasonable results, I'm stuck with the knowledge that I could have done better. In 2009 I can forget all that and start again.

2009 marks the beginning of a lot of things for me. I turned 18 half a month ago, so 2009 will be greatly about discovering myself as a person, especially with all the constructs society has about a person becoming an adult. I will be beginning my tertiary education, hopefully starting a double degree at one of the best universities in the country. (Though it kinda suck Aussie uni's aren't up to standard with the rest of the world.) The beginning of uni will also signify the beginning of my studies towards my career, and doing what I love in this world. Hopefully also the beginning of being a professional artist.

There are many things I want to accomplish in 2009. Some big things, some small. Many are personal, or private. Some of the most important things I want to accomplish in 2009 include a lot more painting, and simply practicing drawing. I need a pile of drafts before I'm happy with an artwork, and it's largely because of my lack of drawing skill. I plan to change that :). I would very much love to launch a website selling my work at the end of the year. I have a heap of paintings I'm working on at the moment, and I hope to build a portfolio I would not be ashamed to reproduce for people around the world.

I want to practice my writing a lot more. Writing is a huge passion of mine, and I hope to become published in the future. I have several ideas that I want to explore and expand in the new year. Goals that aren't related specifically to anything range from random little things to bigger things, such as moving out of home sometime in the next few years. I'd really love to repaint my room. The light pink doesn't really fit in with who I am anymore :P I'd love to learn to blow glass, and belly dancing has always been something I want to try. Of course I also want to exercise more. The most important goal to me at the moment though, is to embrace every opportunity that comes my way and to live in the moment. 2009 is only coming once and I want to enjoy it for all it's worth.

Happy New Year!
